Competitor Research · Example edition
Compare the alternatives a user would really consider.
This fictional comparison uses three invented approaches to project handover: a shared folder, a document index, and a project portal. It makes no claims about named commercial products.
| Criterion | Shared folder | Document index | Project portal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Low in this example | Moderate in this example | Higher in this example |
| Purpose labels | Added to filenames | Explicit per item | Depends on configuration |
| Ownership | Separate record needed | Shown beside item | Depends on configuration |
| Maintenance | Folder hygiene | Index and files | System and content |
Start with the user’s choice
A competitor is not always another branded tool. A familiar folder or a manual routine may be the real alternative, with lower setup effort and known limitations.
Record observations precisely
For a real product comparison, note the version, plan, date, and tested workflow. Keep marketing claims separate from behavior you actually observed.
Draw a bounded conclusion
The index offers explicit context with a modest setup in this example, but it creates a maintenance task. Test whether that tradeoff helps the actual receiving team before recommending a switch.
